Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp Crisco melted
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp nutmeg

Instructions

  • Combine beaten egg, sugar, and melted Crisco. Add milk.
  • Mix flour with baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  • Combine liquid and dry ingredients, stirring only until smooth.
  • Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut out doughnuts.
  • Fry in Crisco (enough to cover).
  • Remove and drain on paper towels

Make sure your oil is hot enough before frying—about 350°F is ideal. If it’s too cool, your doughnuts will soak up grease.
