Yaya’s Tips for Success
This Hot Dog Chili is the perfect topping for classic Southern-style chili dogs. It’s rich, tangy, and just the right consistency to smother over a grilled hot dog. The secret to a great hot dog chili is letting it simmer low and slow so the flavors meld together, creating a smooth, thick sauce that clings to every bite.
To get the best results:
- Break the ground beef up very finely – Use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to get a smoother texture.
- Cook the onions down until soft – No one wants crunchy onions in their chili!
- Simmer uncovered for the last 30 minutes if the chili needs to thicken.
- Use chili sauce, not ketchup – It adds a richer depth of flavor.
- Make ahead and freeze – This chili freezes beautifully, so make extra and save some for later.
Yaya’s Customization Ideas
Want to switch it up? Here are some variations to try:
- Make it spicier – Add cayenne pepper, more hot sauce, or diced jalapeños.
- Use different meats – Swap ground beef for ground turkey or even sausage for a different twist.
- Go smoky – Stir in a little smoked paprika for extra depth.
- Add a touch of sweetness – A teaspoon of brown sugar can balance the tangy flavors.
- Make it heartier – Stir in a can of drained and rinsed pinto or black beans for a chili that can stand alone.
