Ingredients

  • 1 large cabbage
  • 1 medium onion
  • Shred these in a food processor.

Sauce

  • ¾ cup oil
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp celery seed

Yaya’s Tips for Success

  • Be sure to shred the cabbage finely for the best texture and soak up all that tangy-sweet sauce.
  • I like to stir it every day or two to keep the flavor even throughout.
  • If you’re making this ahead for an event, give it at least 2 days in the fridge—it mellows and brightens beautifully.
  • A glass or stainless steel bowl works best since the vinegar can react with some plastics.

Yaya’s Customization Ideas

  • This is a versatile little recipe, and you can tweak it depending on what you’re serving it with. Sometimes I’ll add a few strips of thinly sliced bell pepper for color.
  • If you want a bit of heat, toss in a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.
  • You can also swap white vinegar for apple cider vinegar if you like a deeper tang.
