YaYa’s Marinated Slaw
Ingredients
- 1 large cabbage
- 1 medium onion
- Shred these in a food processor.
Sauce
- ¾ cup oil
- ½ cup vinegar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 tbsp celery seed
Yaya’s Tips for Success
- Be sure to shred the cabbage finely for the best texture and soak up all that tangy-sweet sauce.
- I like to stir it every day or two to keep the flavor even throughout.
- If you’re making this ahead for an event, give it at least 2 days in the fridge—it mellows and brightens beautifully.
- A glass or stainless steel bowl works best since the vinegar can react with some plastics.
Yaya’s Customization Ideas
- This is a versatile little recipe, and you can tweak it depending on what you’re serving it with. Sometimes I’ll add a few strips of thinly sliced bell pepper for color.
- If you want a bit of heat, toss in a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.
- You can also swap white vinegar for apple cider vinegar if you like a deeper tang.
