- Place butter on top. Cover and cook on LOW for 7–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours.
- Stir every 30 minutes to 1 hour, if possible, to prevent sticking.
- Once the grits are tender and creamy, stir well. If using heavy cream, add it now and cook an additional 15 minutes.
- Serve hot with more butter, salt, and pepper if desired.
