Yaya’s Tips for Success
When making this old-fashioned Squash Casserole, it’s real important to cook your squash until it’s nice and tender but not waterlogged. If the squash has too much moisture, your casserole might turn out a little soggy, so make sure you drain it well after cooking. Also, melt your butter before mixing it in with the other ingredients, so it spreads throughout the dish evenly. Using a good sharp cheddar cheese gives this casserole a deeper, richer flavor that just sings in every bite.
If you’re short on time, you can sauté your onions in a little butter beforehand to mellow out their flavor and make the casserole even sweeter and more comforting.
Yaya’s Customization Ideas
This casserole is a Southern staple, but there’s all kinds of ways you can put your own little twist on it:
- Add a dash of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick.
- Swap out the cheddar for Monterey Jack or a Colby blend for a creamier taste.
- Top with crushed Ritz crackers mixed with melted butter for a crunchier, buttery topping.
- Stir in a handful of cooked bacon crumbles if you want to make it a little heartier.
You can even sneak in a few finely chopped carrots or zucchini if you want to stretch it and sneak in some extra veggies!
