Yaya’s Tips for Success

This Country Style Steak with Gravy is a true Southern classic—tender, smothered in rich, homemade gravy, and slow-cooked until it practically melts in your mouth. It’s the kind of meal that brings back memories of Sunday dinners with the family, served up with mashed potatoes, green beans, and biscuits to soak up every last drop of that gravy.

To make sure your Country Style Steak turns out just right, follow these tips:

  • Use round steak or cube steak – Cube steak is already tenderized, making it an easier choice if you’re short on time.
  • Season and flour well – Lightly salting the meat before dredging it in flour gives it more flavor.
  • Brown the steak before baking – This locks in the juices and helps build that deep, rich gravy flavor.
  • Cook the flour until golden – This step is key to getting a smooth, lump-free gravy.
  • Bake low and slow – Cooking at 325°F for about an hour ensures the steak is fork-tender.

Yaya’s Customization Ideas

Want to put your own spin on this dish? Try these variations:

  • Make it extra savory – Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce to the gravy.
  • Give it a little kick – A pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce adds a nice warmth.
  • Use beef broth instead of water – This gives the gravy a richer, deeper flavor.
  • Add onions and mushrooms – Sautéed onions and mushrooms make a delicious addition to the gravy.
  • Thicken the gravy even more – If you like a thicker gravy, mix in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water).
